BASIC FACTS indian3.gif
The indigenous people of America are mostly known under the names “American Indians”, “Amerindians” and “Red-Skins”. Like most indigenous people, the Americans were robbed and killed by the Europeans. But luckily, the American Indians still exists, even though the numbers of peoples are incredibly low. The American Indians consists of numerous tribes, including the Apache, Sioux, Cheyenne, Maya and Mohawk. The word “American Indians” originates from when Christopher Columbus sailed from Europe to America, in belief that he were going to India. When he first met the natives of America, he thought they were the Indian natives, so he named them “Indians”. Even later when they figured out that it was actually America, and not India, they still kept the name “Indian”, but attached “American” to it, hence the name “American Indians”. Also the word indigenous can be translated into “a population with the earliest connection to the place”. The American Indians were living all over America, but most of them were living in Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia and Peru. But there wasn’t only one tribe living in these places, for example Mexico were divided between many American Indians, such as Yucatán, Oaxaca, Chiapas and Veracruz.
